As the wave of Electric Vehicles(EV) is spreading across the globe like wildfire, a part of the bigger ‘Green Wave’, India is also catching up with its western counterparts in this Green marathon. Reflection of this can be seen throughout the different states of India. States are specifically focusing and laying emphasis on this transition from normal vehicles to Electric Vehicles(EVs) due to the increasing mobility and for the Climate/Eco-friendly cause.
We did a story on Tamil Nadu’s latest policy on Electric Vehicles and the green shift check it out here https://smartsustain.in/tamil-nadu-uncovers-its-new-ev-policy/ .
The C40 World Mayors’ Summit happened in Copenhagen on 9th-13th Oct, transport secretary Narayan Swarup Nigam says, “Our plan is to completely shift to the electric mode by 2030. We already have our tram network and a formidable metro network across the city is also coming up soon.”
On Thursday, the city Kolkata won the prestigious C40 award in Copenhagen for green mobility. Bloomberg Philanthropies was the organization that announced the seven winners of the 2019 C40 Cities. For Kolkata, mayor Firhad Hakim who is serving as the mayor of Kolkata since 2018 and Minister for Urban Development and Municipal Affairs of West Bengal since 2011, received the award.
“West Bengal Transport Corporation has already introduced a fleet of electric buses that connects Kolkata and its expansive suburbs. WBTC plans to have an entire city fleet of 5,000 electric buses by 2030. This would bring down per annum CO2 emissions by 782,560 tonnes. Under FAME-II (faster adoption and manufacturing of electric vehicles) scheme, we have already placed an order for 300 more electric buses. All these e-buses will replace old polluting buses. The shift will be gradual”, said Mayor Hakim in his award acceptance speech.
Kolkata has already got 80 electric buses plying across the city. New Town alone will have 50 e-buses shortly. We are also bringing in 100 more e-buses for Haldia and Durgapur-Asansol. Completing a 100 percent shift is a decade-long process, said a senior transport department officer.
So, basically what they are trying to do is a proliferation of EVs that to the vehicles of WBTC. So, this greener shift helps in bringing the E-Revolution in the state. This will not only just help in fighting climate change and environmental degradation but also in increasing the overall energy-efficiency and creating more mobility through targeting the governmental owned/regulated public transportation.
