Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) or also called global goals are a set of goals that the member nations of the UN (inclusive of India) adopted in the year 2015. It is considered to be a universal action to end poverty and thereby ensuring the citizens of these nations enjoy peace and prosperity by the end of 2030.
There are 17 SDG’s in the list and SDG 4 or the fourth goal in the SDG list is focused on providing quality education to kids across the globe and promote lifelong learning opportunities to all.
SDG 4 is made up of 10 targets that need to be achieved which are
- Free primary and secondary education to all the kids by the year 2030.
- All kids will have equal access to quality pre-school.
- Equal access for men and women to quality and affordable higher studies (technical, vocational and tertiary education) including universities.
- Increase the number of youths with relevant skills for different jobs and entrepreneurship.
- To make sure there is no discrimination in the field of education.
- To increase the universal literacy and numeracy rate by 2030.
- To increase education based on sustainable development and global citizenship by the year 2030.
- To build a greater number of schools that are safe, nonviolent and effective for the children, the disabled, and gender sensitive people.
- To expand facilities such as scholarship for developing countries especially the least developed countries for enrollment in higher education and improve methods for the developed countries.
- To increase the number of qualified teachers substantially especially for the developing and under developed countries.
There are five other SDG’s that have a reference and impact on education which are:
Health and Wellbeing (SDG 3 target 3.7): This ensures that there is universal access to sexual and reproductive healthcare which includes family planning and education for kids based on national strategies and programs.
Gender Equality (SDG 5 target 5.6): It aims to guarantee women of age between 15-49 have equal access to sexual and reproductive healthcare and education.
Decent work and sustainable growth (SDG 8 target 8.6): to reduce unemployment rate among youth by 2020.
Responsible consumption & production (SDG 12 target 12.8): to make sure people worldwide have apt awareness information on sustainable lifestyle and development.
Climate change mitigation (SDG 13 target 13.3): to improve education and awareness based on climate change and its effects so as to reduce its impact.
The UN and its member nations including India have taken education as one of the main goals that need to be achieved by the end of 2030 so as to improve the world on a positive note.
