Is the Global Pandemic a Driving Force to Sustainable Fashion?

Clothing that is designed, manufactured, distributed, and used in a manner in which they cause no harm to the environment

Ever since the pandemic started in the early quarter of 2020 sustainable fashion has been gaining hype. It brought about many changes for the better. Till then not many people used to give much thought to sustainable fashion, but once everything went online the topic came into the limelight.

For those of you who still wonder what sustainable fashion is all about don’t feel left out as it just started gaining momentum in the recent months. Sustainable fashion is referred to clothing that is designed, manufactured, distributed, and used in a manner in which they cause no harm to the environment like causing pollution etc.

Prior to the pandemic people used to recklessly buy clothes even though they had an abundance of them. Compared to a few decades ago the cost of clothing has come down drastically thereby increasing its demand in the market. Since there was a surge in demand, companies too used to produce clothes on a large scale and that too in a non-sustainable manner. As per recent estimates around 73% of clothes that we disposed of ended in the landfill which is not a sustainable way of disposing of them. Since people bought more and more clothes, they disposed of the older one’s though they were in good shape. This leads to the wastage of a lot of resources.

With the onset of the pandemic and the closure of stores and other shopping hubs due to the lockdown which was imposed worldwide by the respective governments, people started to rely on online stores for their supplies. They have become more thoughtful about the things they buy. The companies now have started to give thought to more sustainable methods for making and distributing clothes.

So why is sustainable fashion so important?

With the population increasing exponentially each year the materials required to make these clothes are becoming more and more scarce. This will eventually lead to overuse of the said materials thereby exhausting them. If a sustainable manner is not followed it causes other issues such as pollution and the use of nonrenewable resources.

These days people have started to give more thoughts about sustainable living especially due to the crisis caused by the pandemic. As far as the fashion industry is considered the pandemic acted as a driving force to sustainability. Of course, the pandemic in itself is a major threat to the world and many lives have been lost due to it and many more have suffered its consequences directly or in indirect means as well.
