SDG7: Ensure Access to Affordable, Reliable, Sustainable and Modern Energy for All

Sustainable Development Goal 7(#SDG 7) – RiseUp4SDGs

Clean and Green Energy is one amongst the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals which are a bold universal agreement to build an equal and just world for People, Planet and Prosperity.

Energy is Power! Energy is Progress! Energy is prosperity!

Thus, access to Energy is important for economic development, human wellbeing and fighting poverty. The United Nations 17 Sustainable Development goals are all interlinked#SDG7 is the solution to many challenges the Human Race faces today.

This includes
  • Making Cities and Human Settlement Inclusive and Safe #SDG 11 Sustainable Cities and Communities
  • Building Resilient Infrastructure and Fostering Innovation #SDG9 Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure
  • Promote Sustained Inclusive Economic Growth #SDG8 Decent Work and Economic Growth
  • Action to combat climate change #SDG13 Climate Action
  • Eradication of poverty #SDG1 No Poverty
  • Food Security #SDG2 No hunger
  • Empower all women & girls #SDG5 Gender Equality
  • Ensuring healthy lives #SDG3 Good health and well-being and above all
  • Ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education #SDG4 Quality Education.

Use of Fire as a source of energy marks the beginning of human civilization. Fire was used by the ancient man for light, warmth at night, for cooking and also to frighten animals. Soon he harnessed fire energy. With the advent of Industrial Revolution coal, oil and natural gases were used as the source of Energy. The increase in population resulted in greater manufacturing and in turn more consumption of energy and fuel. The alarming use of the nonrenewable sources resulted in an increase in environment pollution and   also an increase in human concern for this pollution.

This led to the use of renewable energy, which is clean and Inexhaustible, safe, available everywhere, avoids geopolitical conflict and creates wealth and jobs.

Renewable Energy sources such as:

  • Solar Energy is energy derived from solar radiation and is a very clean form of energy and available in abundance.
  • Wind Power is clean, free, intermittently available, form of energy
  • Geothermal Energy is derived from the heat that comes from the sub-surface of the Earth and from hot springs. With no harmful emissions and due to Earth’s high heat capacity, can be easily replenished.
  • Hydropower is derived by tapping the kinetic energy of flowing water and is emission-free.
  • Tidal Power is tapped to generate electricity and has a great capacity as an alternative to conventional sources of energy.
  • Biomass can be burned and be used for energy production.
We educators need to be an energy advocates and empower our students and mobilize & engage them to take action for SDG7 Affordable and Clean Energy.
