Well, this is a modern world in modern times, things are hard to acquire or afford here, one must go out of his way in order to achieve all the luxury and to drink the elixir of life. This century is actually based on what was proposed by Charles Darwin a long time ago which is “Survival Of The Fittest”. However, there are still some people who don’t believe in luxury and although they do drink the elixir of life and do go out of their ways but only to achieve great things. Such is a story of Arun Krishnamurthy.
Arun Krishnamurthy a guy who quit his well-paying job at Google to create and launch an eco-movement that has been successful in cleaning and restoring at least 93 freshwater bodies across 14 Indian States. This Eco-movement evolved into the Environmentalist Foundation Of India (EFI), which is a non-profit wildlife conservation and habitat restoration group. The group has removed garbage and harmful botanical species from these lakes and ponds, that are crucial for maintaining the ecological balance of nature.
Krishnamurthy’s love for water-bodies developed during his childhood as his neighborhood was surrounded by them. Which is the reason why he left his luxurious life and job just to see clean Water-Bodies with frogs, fish, birds, and greenery.
“I have never been uncertain about anything that I have done in life. For a cleaner and greener environment, I started making efforts to restore water bodies in Chennai, supported by the local panchayat, and later expanded the efforts to other cities as well. Since then, there has been no looking back for me, We work very closely with the Centre and State governments. We do not receive any funding but depend on the government for permissions and approvals. There is a positive trend across the country where the administration is keen on encouraging groups such as ours to mobilize the community to revive freshwater lakes and ponds”, told Krishnamurthy in an interview.
EFI which calls upon people to join their initiative with the slogan — “Volunteer for India and her Environment with EFI”.
As the movement is growing, the efforts are backed by partner organizations including ‘The Hinduja Foundation’, ‘The Murugappa Group’, ‘Shriram Group’, among others, through funds and volunteers. Krishnamurthy also won the Rolex Awards for Enterprise 2012 for his efforts for restoring lakes.
