Orxa Energies, Bengaluru-based startup is getting ready to launch Mantis, India’s first electric super street bike. It says that battery swapping can help tackle biases against EVs when it comes to concerns about up-front costs, range, charge time, and charging infrastructure. It is gonna be launching Mantis soon as it passes its last stage by the end of the year.
When its founders, started Orxa Energies in 2015, they just wanted to build an Electric Motorcycle that they wanted to Ride. They looked around & found none, so, they decided to build the Mantis themselves! They wanted to stay true to the true spirit of Motorcycling – and believe that an Electric Motorcycle should be an experience that is “no-compromise” and seamless. “No-Compromise” because no one should have to change their lifestyle or habits to fit an EV. And “Seamless” because the experience of riding a Mantis should have no hiccups.
“Most of the industry estimates say that if an electric vehicle is about 20-30% higher than an equivalent category vehicle, then that’s a good price for that electric vehicle. So, you have to see it that way, if I want to buy a 300 CC motorcycle or a 100 CC motorcycle and is the EV equivalent that I want to buy 20-30% more than that, the major reason for this is like buying 10 years of petrol upfront, when you buy an EV, you are buying 10 years of petrol, this is the sort of thinking that people need to have. But, it’s a change of thought, people will slowly change, as the EVs once become more popular,” told Ranjita Ravi, Co-founder, Orxa Energies to Smartsustain on being asked about the EVs being costly.
Orxa Energies India’s first three-wheeled electric bike manufacturer. The concept of three-wheeled is new here in India but they are popular globally especially among the kids and as well as adults.
The Mantis uses swappable battery technology for charging, which is the most important element and concern while using electric vehicles, especially in India. It also has a range of about 200 Kms which is more if compared with any electric two-wheeler, its top speed is 140 km/hr. The high speed is obtained due to the single-speed transmission without any limits.
“As a company, we believe in the swap, we are big advocates of battery swap because, we believe this has a lot of opportunities both in terms of the energy-play, how you can finance battery, how you can work this entire ecosystem and also of tackling this whole upfront cost bias that people have. So, these are the certain things that we want to play with and this is where we are gonna use swap itself, we have multiple modules of battery packs in our vehicle and these modules are already deployed in the system of other vehicles as well,” added Ranjita Ravi, co-founder, Orxa Energies.
