Organic farming has been gaining traction over the past decade with more and more people becoming health cautious and trying to avoid food that was farmed using unnatural tactics like the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides to improve crop yield and profit. These procedures have been identified as highly harmful by researchers world wide and many such food has been banned in international markets everywhere from being imported.
So, what is the disadvantage of unnaturally cultivated/produced crops and fruits?
- Researchers have found that crops that are ripened or cultivated using chemical fertilizers and pesticides can cause serious health issues like cancer, stomach and intestinal problems cell mutation which leads to serious disorders and many other issues based on similar lines.
- Secondly these crops lack nutritional value as many helpful microbes gets killed while using chemical mixtures for crop yield. Also unnaturally ripened produce loses the fruits/crops goodness as it was unnaturally made ready rather than through its natural procedure.
- Though many of these products look good it still doesn’t have the same taste as the natural product.
- It is dangerous to the farmers as well since they get exposed to these chemicals. These chemicals also make the soil lose its fertility turning them into desert plots where no plant can grow.
Why are organic products preferred more? What are its health benefits?
Organic products not only reduce the health risk to the consumers but also to the farmers who cultivate these products since there exposure to chemicals is very low and this reduces the toxicity in the bodies of both the consumers and farmers. Food grown using organic procedures are said to contain good amount of nutrients compared to their chemical counterpart. It also reduces land pollution and soil erosion and makes increases the soil’s fertility which when compared to chemicals that ruin them.
Organic farming though not as economical in terms of cost and overall immediate output compared to the use of chemicals, have a long-term benefit in store as well as health benefits. People around the world have started buying organic food though it is costlier.
The old saying goes like “Health is wealth” and this remains true when it comes to organic products.
