When you hear about the word ‘Electricity’, the first thing that comes to mind is power. But there is one more thing to add upon, which is, it saves nature. How?
Electric vehicles(EV) are the future.
Basically, there are three main types of electric vehicles
- Hybrid electric vehicles – which are mechanized by gasoline and electricity. At first, it starts off with an electric motor then gradually the gasoline engine cuts as the speed rises.
- Plug-in hybrid electric vehicle – these types of vehicles can be recharged by regenerative braking and plug into the external source.
- Battery electric vehicles.- this is also called EV’s, which are fully electric vehicles using a rechargeable battery.
EV’s are cheaper to buy and also have low fuel costs. They have the best torsion and are very reactive. Due to the boost of the advancement of technology, the EVs are more digitally connected than the other normal vehicle as they have the option to control charging from a smartphone app. There is no need to go to the charging stations every time as the electric grid is available everywhere. They use a lot of energy but the emissions created are higher than the conventional vehicles. This is mainly due to the use of lithium-ion batteries which is so much needful for the electric vehicles.
The majority of the C02 emissions come from the energy used to manufacture the vehicles. With the more efficient manufacturing techniques, the quality of the emissions created during the production of batteries will be upgraded. They can improve public health and also charge Ev’s on renewable energy such as solar to reduce the emissions that contribute to climate change.
There are mainly two types of categories of vehicle emissions
1.Direct emissions – During the fueling process, the direct emissions are emitted through the tailpipe. It includes greenhouse gases, mainly carbon dioxide, smog such as nitrogen oxides, and other harmful pollutants that are harmful to our human. The Evs have a gasoline engine in addition to the electric motor which produces evaporative emissions from the fuel system. The main benefit of electric vehicles is they can improve air quality everywhere especially in the urban areas.
2.Life cycle emissions-It includes all the emissions related to fuel and vehicle production, processing, distribution, and recycling and also it emits so many pollutants as the direct emissions. The emissions are lower for electricity generation so the EVs produce fewer life cycle emissions than conventional vehicles. The usage of emissions depends upon a particular area or a country. The life cycle emissions can be minimized by using electricity generated by non-polluting renewable sources like solar.
The government has huge support in bringing up EVs through FAME India Phase 2(Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of (Hybrid) and electric vehicles in India. Recently, the department of heavy industries under the Ministry of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises has sanctions 2636 electric vehicle charging stations under this scheme.
