Ecofiltro – How This Water Filter Works

Water filters have become an important utility all across the world. Though our earth comprises over 70% of water, clean and safe drinking is hard to come by these days.

As per WHO, over 3.4 million kids die each year due to drinking of contaminated water. The figures are quite higher when everyone is included and many more fall sick due to the same.

This was not like that if you look back to a few decades ago. Rainwater used to be the cleanest form of drinking water if we date back to the late 1900s. But these days even rainwater is polluted by the pollutants present in the air and is considered unsafe.

Due to the above-mentioned reasons, people started using filters to get the water cleaned before they consumed it. Though at first, it was a costly product which only the rich could afford, now it is available for everyone and the cost has drastically reduced. Ecofiltro is just one of the many water filters that are available in the market these days.

Its main objective is to reach the one million Guatemalan families who live in rural areas and provide them with safe and healthy drinking water by the end of this year.

Ecofiltro is a product that was invented by Fernando Mazariegos in 1981. It is an artisanal water filter made of clay, sawdust, and colloidal silver where clay builds small channels in the inner walls of the water filter, the sawdust, turned into activated charcoal removes any smell or taste in water, and the colloidal silver works as a disinfectant for the water, on the surface of the clay filtering unit.

As per the details provided by the ecofiltro site it has already distributed close to 500,000 units to the people of Guatemala, many of which live in the rural areas. It is also sold in countries such as the US, Mexico, and Costa Rica, and in Europe, it is sold in Spain and Italy. Each ecofiltro water filter and dispenser is capable of filtering up to 20 liters of water a day and also removes substances like coliforms and protozoa. The lab results which were taken show that it removes up to 99% of turbidity, along with removing 100% of the chlorine and bacteria. The product costs about 34 USD which is quite cheap compared to many other filters. The maintenance washing needs to be done only once every six months and the filtering unit inside needs to be replaced every couple of years.
