Why focus on SDG5?
Gender Equality is a Fundamental Human Right. It helps in laying down a strong foundation to build a peaceful and sustainable world. If women are excluded, the cycle of poverty continues and half the population of the world is deprived in the making of prosperous societies.
Gender inequality not only affects individuals but affects the economy of the family and in turn of the country. Gender Inequality slows down economic growth and delays development too. Gender inequality is a major challenge at the local, national and global level.
Challenges Women face:
Today, women face all forms of discrimination. She is missing equal access to education, decent work, ownership and control of land and other forms of property. At times goes through Sexual harassment and also fights the harmful practices of child and early marriage, trafficking and female genital mutilation. An unpaid domestic worker, she has no opportunity to equal participation in leadership and decision making in political, economic and public life. Even when women do take up jobs the gender pay gap means they aren’t earning as much as men.
What do Statistics say?
It says imbalance of power between men and women. Equal Rights to women would benefit humanity at large. Investment of time and money in women Empowerment would not only make progress of sustainable development goal 5, Gender Equality but in turn, when women earn more income, the health and education of their children improve.
Let’s focus on:
Women’s education, as it is crucial to women empowerment.
End Violence against women by enhancing laws.
Economic Empowerment by doing away with the gender pay gap & paying for unpaid work.
End all forms of Discrimination.
