ITC Windsor Gets the First Ever LEED Zero Carbon Certification

Big Boost for Indian hospitality segment

In a boost for sustainability in India ITC hotel Windsor scripted history recently by getting the world’s first LEED Zero carbon certification ever. The hotel is well known for its luxury standards across the globe and the ITC group has the worlds largest group of hotels with platinum certified properties as proven by the United States Green Building Council (USGBC).

This makes the Bengaluru hotel the first to ever achieve this status across the globe.

ITC’s Nakul Anand was quoted saying “a growth story that is a story of sustainability “and highlighted how these innovative projects like ITC Windsor align themselves with the nation’s vision of cutting down on emission acting as the driving force behind the ideology of transforming cities and buildings in order to sustain the future generations . ITC Windsor is an example as to how the hospitality sector in India can make a global level impact on promoting sustainability and zero carbon status.

Wondering what LEED’s certificate means?

LEED’s Zero carbon certificate  shows a deep commitment a person or a company makes to implement building and design strategies which assure a better quality of life. It also includes the creation of an environment where carbon dioxide which is produced through unnatural means gets removed from the atmosphere through the use of technology or other means which maybe be natural or manmade.

Mahesh Ramanujam, president and CEO, USGBC referred to ITC Windsor’s LEED Zero certification as ‘pioneering a new forward for the industry as a whole’ and demonstrating ‘visionary leadership towards a regenerative future.’

Green buildings and its certification have become the need of the hour for many of the nations in order to control air pollution. It is found that the carbon emission and other particles released into the air during construction of buildings are one of the main factors of air pollution in cities. In order to increase the air quality and reduce carbon emission, most of the builders are persuaded to make their building Green building certified.

The government gives various perks to these builders in order to promote sustainable development.
