Sustainable Development Goal 11 is all about Sustainable Cities and Communities. The vision statement of SDG 11 is to “Make Cities Inclusive, Safe, Resilient and Sustainable”. There are 10 targets and 15 indicators for SDG 11.
Cities play an important role in Sustainable Development. It is in cities where development must lead to social, economic, and environmental sustainability. It is in cities where commerce, culture, science, and productivity flourishes. It is the cities that offer opportunities for prosperity both economically and socially for people where they get decent jobs and access to energy, housing, transportation, etc.
The various goals and targets of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals are well integrated, indivisible and totally interlinked with each other. SDG 11 Sustainable Cities & Communities is linked SDG 3: Good Health & Well Being (Target 3.9), SDG 6: Clean Water & Sanitation (target 6.1, 6.2 and 6.5), SDG 12: Sustainable Consumption & Production (target 12.4), SDG 14 : Life Below Water (target 14.3) and SDG 13: Climate Action.
SDG 11 emphasizes improvement in public transport, urban planning, creating green public spaces in particular for older persons, women, children, and persons with special needs. However, unplanned cities are a hurdle in the national planning of a country. Excessive emission of Green House gases in the cities is responsible for climate change and the polluted air people breathe in. We need to transform the way we build and manage our urban spaces by reducing pollution and poverty. Unplanned growth of our cities is a result of the mass migration from our villages to cities and from developing countries to developed countries and slums have now become a significant feature of urban life.
So, #RiseUpTogether to Build Sustainable Cities and Communities!
