The World Social Report 2021 was released by The UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA). The focus for this year’s report was on rural development and how to expunge the divide between rural and urban communities.
The Agenda 2030 is the goal that every organization feels one has to attain to progress in sustainability and the report states that three out of four people live below the poverty line and they live in rural areas. The Agenda 2030 is believed to help people who will anchor them to come out of the poverty line through strategic processes, principles of action, and policies.
The report has given solutions and strategies on how to find sustainable solutions through investment in institutions, water-and-land use technologies, and circular and conservation practices.
One of the case studies is Lao People’s Democratic Republic which has been brought to light by the report was how they reduced the urban-rural gap in water access with the use of community-based resource management.
According to the report, 70% of global water is used for agriculture and recognizes possible solutions for rural regions, including greater dependence on water harvesting and water recycling, and the use of information and communication technologies to progress land-use productivity.
The report has articulated how strategies will involve various countries in ensuring that rural development also protects the environment and in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). They provided a structure that is focused on reinforcing three areas: water- and land-use technologies, circular and conservation practices, and investment in institutions. Another sustainable strategy is to introduce organic farming, mixed farming, smallholder farming, and sustainable livestock management practices.
With the development of the latest technologies which is still ongoing, it is recommended that the rural communities are introduced to the technologies which will help in the development and empowerment of the communities. This approach will lead the rural communities to practice various sustainable strategies.
The report has highlighted the crucial need which is rural development that requires physical, social, and economic investments. The need of the hour is to get every individual to understand how their contribution can help the rural communities to develop in a sustainable manner. When people join hands together, the change occurs on a bigger scale. At the same time, the necessity for organizations and companies to invest in these programs is unavoidable. Without funding, it is difficult to bring proper change and transition to sustainable strategies.
When the whole world joins hands together a positive impact is brought upon which the future generations will thrive.
