Encouraging women to contribute more and come to the forefront in leadership positions in the renewable energy sector
Women have made an immense amount of contribution when it comes to the field of environment and sustainable development. They have worked tirelessly in order to aid and protect the world we live in and nature. Though they have contributed quite a bit, these contributions are not known to the people or rather are not appreciated by the people.
On Wednesday 7th of July, a webinar was hosted by the ministry of new and renewable energy (MNRE) in collaboration with ISA (International Solar Alliance) regarding the topic “Women in Renewable Energy & Sustainability”.
The webinar was conducted in order to encourage women to contribute more and come to the forefront in leadership positions in the renewable energy sector. It also appreciated the efforts made by the women in this sector. It was addressed by Indu Shekhar Chaturvedi who is the current secretary of MNRE. The main addresses of the event were delivered by Dr. Ajay Mathur who is the Director-General of the International Solar Alliance and Ms. Susan Ferguson who is the UN Women’s Country representative for the nation.
The webinar was divided into two panel discussions. The first discussion was based on “Women Leadership in Renewables: Envisioning a New World”.It was participated by Gauri Singh who is the Deputy Director-General of International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), Mahua Acharya who is the Director-General of The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), Sullajja Firodia Motwani who is the CEO of EESL Convergence, and Dr. Arunabha Ghosh who is the CEO of Council on Energy, Environment & Water (CEEW).
The second panel discussion was on the topic of “Women Entrepreneurs in Renewable Energy: A gateway to innovation and economic growth.” The panelists for the second round of discussion were inclusive of Reema Nanavaty who is the Secretary-General of Self Employed Women’s Association (SEWA), Meagan Fallone from the Barefoot college, Cecile Martin Phipps who is the CEO of Frontier Markets, Suhela Khan who is the Director of Communication and Strategy from ISA and Praveen Saxena who is a UN-Women and CEO of Skill Council for Green Jobs.
The webinar was open to the audience across the globe. Some of the noted women environmentalists of India are Sugathakumari, Vandana Shiva, and Sunita Narain. The webinar was hosted as a part of India’s efforts in the role of a Global Theme Champion for the UN High-Level Dialogue on Energy which will be mostly taking place in September this year.
