Pope Francis to Attend Climate Conference in Glasgow

The need to protect the environment, people, and economy

Pope Francis who is the current head of the Roman Catholic church has revealed that he will be attending the Climate Change Conference (COP26) held by the United Nations in Glasgow in November, if his health permits him to do so, says Scotland’s Roman Catholic bishops.

The bishops have confirmed the pontiff’s attendance at the summit along with other world leaders in a statement that was released on their official website.

“Having written to the Holy Father to assure him of a warm welcome, should he attend the conference, they are delighted to hear that he does hope to attend and would be glad to meet with them in Glasgow,” a statement said.

Pope Francis is recovering from colon surgery and will remain in the hospital for a few more days, the Vatican said. He is expected to resume his duties and other normal activities from August after he recovers.

The Scottish bishops have been quoted saying that the pope “will be in Scotland for a very short time, most of which will be spent participating in the COP26 Conference“,  though the Vatican has not  officially announced the pope’s trip to Scotland yet.

Also, on the 4th of October, the Vatican will host a major gathering of the world’s religious leaders and top scientists to take a common stand and raise the stakes ahead of the conference.

Pope Francis is a strong supporter of the goals set by the UN in 2015 called the Paris accord to reduce global warming. Back in 2015, he wrote an encyclical (official letter by the pope) on topics such as the need to protect the environment, reduce wasteful lifestyles, global warming and protect the people from the most devastating effects of climate change.

The October 4 conference is called “Faith and Science: Towards COP26,” and is being organized by the UK and Italy. It aims to bring together around 40 religious’ leaders from the world’s main religions and about 10 scientists. The pope is expected to attend the meeting.

The pope was one of the many who criticized the former U.S. President Donald Trump who withdrew the United States from the 2015 Paris accord to limit global warming. The Vatican pope also welcomed President Joe Biden’s return to the accord. Joe Biden’s climate envoy John Kerry had met the pope in May and said he hoped the pope would attend the COP26 meeting since the pontiff has the moral authority to sway public opinion on matters pertaining to climate change.
