Wishing everyone a prosperous and sustainable year ahead
With the onset of the new year, people have started their search for a new resolution that they can follow the entire year. With the pandemic raging on and the emergence of the new variant of Covid 19 (Omicron), the future is not very clear. People, organizations, countries and as a matter of fact, the entire world has been affected by the pandemic. Sustainable Development has become the need of the hour, not just in the pandemic aspect but in the overall wellbeing of the planet. We all are aware of the facts such as the temperatures being risen, which in turn is resulting in the rise in sea levels, the ozone layer getting depleted and all the other issues that are caused due to our lifestyle.
It was just a couple of months back the climate summit took place in Glasgow where over 200 nations of the world attended and agreed on tackling climate change. This is not possible for these countries without the support of their citizens. Of course, the old saying goes “Charity begins at home”. Until we start doing what we must, the situation is not going to change.
In many of my earlier articles, I have mentioned what we as the citizens of this world could do in order to tackle these situations. They were simple steps such as using eco-friendly materials, usage of EV’s or public transport for commuting etc. These are simple steps, to begin with. Let’s take this to a bit more advanced level. It is, of course, the thought to improve further which counts. We need to keep advancing in our measures to lead sustainable living. Only then, change at the right time is certain. If we loosen up it may be too late to save our planet.
To lead a sustainable life is to ensure that one doesn’t waste any given resource at any given point in time. To keep it simple we must not waste anything. We should start promoting sustainable development as a whole in all that we or our nation do. Let’s take the example of sustainability in the construction field. Are you aware of the fact that the construction industry is a major contribution to factors such as air pollution, water pollution and many other forms of pollution? The old and traditional way of construction also wastes a lot of materials and work on power sources such as petrol, diesel and coal which are nonrenewable. If we were to promote sustainable construction in our country the builders would be forced to use the new ways which involve cutting edge technology which would, in turn, save a lot of resources.
This kind of industrial revolution could certainly turn tides for the world. It would also be profitable for the construction agencies as they tend to use lesser resources and with technology in play, even run-on clean energy. The construction industry is just an example. Many of the other industries (Transportation, FMCG’s, trading industry, vehicle manufacturing industry etc.) also need to change. It will be beneficial to these industries and the world at the same time. If people like us start promoting sustainable growth the companies will have to make the change as, where there is a demand only then supply exists. The customers are the king of the market, companies exist only to serve them.
It is time we the humankind make an honest effort in stepping up and undo what generations of our kind have done to our world. All that our ancestors have done is coming back to haunt us. In the current path that our world is following we just have a few more decades with us at the best. By then our world will change for the worse to a point of no return.
Let us join hands in saving the future generations to come and promote sustainability as a whole! Let us make that change! Wishing everyone a prosperous and sustainable year ahead.
