As the Corona pandemic surges on sustainability has become the need of the hour for many countries across the globe. One of the ideas that were looked upon under this is the sustainable cities and communities project which is envisioned by the United Nations Department of Economic and social affairs among many other global organizations. They aim to fulfill 10 goals in total.

So, what are sustainable cities and communities project?

•    These are  projects which involve providing people  safe and cost-effective environments to live in. We all know that the world is facing a population explosion and more people require place to live in. Sustainable cities aim in improving the basic lifestyle of the people worldwide.

•    These projects provide sustainable transportation facilities to the public as well. They aim to make public transportation affordable and improve road safety for the people especially for women and children and the differently abled people as well.

•    Sustainable urbanization is another goal which is been set by sustainable cities and communities project. They aim in better planning of city development keeping the future in mind and developing as per the needs laid out while keeping sustainability in mind.

•    It aims in the better safeguarding and maintenance of the countries culture and heritage. It has been deteriorating over the past few years and maintaining it has become the need of the hour for many nations so as to preserve it for the future generations to come.

•    Next goal is to reduce the number of deaths caused by natural disasters by improving disaster management thereby protecting a nation’s economy and its poor people.

•    Reducing the environmental impact caused by urbanization is another goal they aim to follow. They plan to keep in check air pollution, water pollution and other kinds of impact urban development can bring on a nation’s natural environment.

•    It aims in providing green and publicly accessible spaces for women, children and the differently abled people.

•    To promote strong national and regional development by supporting positive environmental and social links between peri urban and urban areas.

•    To reduce disaster risk, improvement of resource efficiency and implementation of integrated plans and policies for the same.

•    It also plans to support underdeveloped nations in sustainable growth by providing financial and technical assistance to them.

In short, the sustainable cities and communities projects aim in improving nations worldwide in the area of sustainable growth. They plan to make this project a success by the beginning of next decade i.e. 2030.
