Central Government Likely To Lower The Toll On EVs To Foster Green Mobility

The Electric Vehicles/E-Mobility is all set to be practiced by India on a large scale than ever before. But, besides policy regarding EVs, the manufacturing and the implementation of this transition to Electric Vehicles-driven mobility another important task to be done is to attract the consumers to go with the flow of E-Mobility and Central Govt. is finding methods to do that. Central Government is likely to propose the idea of lowering the toll on EVs to give green mobility a push.

Central Government is about to take some measures under its EV adoption plan. The measures include using green registration plates for zero-emission vehicles, exemption of EVs requiring a permit for transport vehicles. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has now given a deadline of August 31, 2019, and expects all state transport departments to put the Centre’s EV adoption plan into action by then.

The future policy states significance amid the government’s push to incentivize the adoption of electric vehicles on a good rate, as it also recently cut goods and service tax on EVs. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has sent out the draft toll policy for consultation in the nodal ministry of road transport and highways which will be sent for Gadkari’s approval soon.

“India’s FAME policy will play a vital role in promoting the use of electric vehicles in the country. The introduction of green number plates and exempting electric vehicles from the permit by MORTH are the right steps that will boost India’s last and first-mile connectivity options. We are very happy to see that the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MORTH) is recommending this along with road tax exemptions to all the state governments which will yield faster implementation of these processes. We are sure that state governments will speed up the registrations to turn India’s EV dream into a reality.”, said, Mahesh Babu, CEO, Mahindra Electric.

Not only this but also the Department of Heavy Industries said that under the FAME-II scheme, electric vehicles being used as transport vehicles will be entertained with subsidies. Few states have already waived road tax for electric vehicles resulting in a lower purchase cost. But with this policy, the central government has requested all states which haven’t waived off-road tax for EVs, to reconsider and reduce the road tax to the maximum possible extent so as to minimize the cost of EV to the buyers.
