Corona Virus and Supply Chain

The year 2020 started off with a bang. Celebrations and parties everywhere for the start of a new decade with new hopes and resolutions. But the only resolution the nation has followed for the past few months is to “Stay home and stay safe”. I have never known terms like Quarantine, Lockdown, Pandemic, Flattening the curve and Isolation; I am sure many of you who are reading this, would also be in my state by the start of this year. But this year has made everyone realize that life can be unpredictable and changed at any point of time. The whole world is battling against a 125nm virus which is being a threat to the whole of mankind.

Even through these tough times, most of us have been lucky to have access to the basic needs like food and other resources. The credit goes to the “Supply Chain Management” of our nation.

The supply chain is the supply process of making and selling commercial goods, from its commencement till its resultant where it reaches as a product for the consumer.

This forms a large network from the supply of materials to the production and manufacturing of goods till their distribution and sale.

Just like many other sectors, the Supply chain has also faced a major hit due to the pandemic.

Starting with the production in the food industry, where there was non-availability of labour, which resulted in inability for the farmers to get access to the markets to sell their harvested crops. As we all are aware of the domino effect where one action can have a knock-on effect on its upcoming blocks, the same adheres to the economy as well. Due to the shortage of raw materials for food industries, the production had a thump which resulted in less production. That made a rise in demand which triggered the pricing.

The common demand laid by people during this period to the government is to take a look at the rising price of fuel. As they play a major role in the commutation of supplies from source production to wholesale and for the consumers to do their essential services.

Amidst the depreciation in the economy, there is a chance of boon in Indian market which can favour the upbringing of thrift. The conflict rising between two giant nations, USA and China—has paved way for new investments in India. “Foxconn” the firm which is leading in the manufacturing of iPhones is set to open up in India, which provides a massive job opportunity for Indians.

To meet a good supply chain, there should be enough collaborative planning across all functions.

It should accelerate and improve the process and network.  The current scenario of the supply chain and the issues faced by the pandemic situation is this way and let’s unite to help in the flow of the chain.
