Go Green! Go Solar!- CSTEP Is Here With CREST!

Having a huge area with an average of 300 bright days a year, India is ready to provide enough clean and renewable solar power available every year across its length and breadth – enough to electrify the nation many times over!

The possibility of our rooftops to capture the sun’s energy for power generation to the maximum is yet to be explored.

Bengaluru based Center for Study of Science, Technology, and Policy  (CSTEP)  could sort out the technical uncertainty that most owners face when they wish to install rooftop PV systems. The extent of power that can be generated through the rooftop, considering the sunlight and shadows of buildings and trees around their building, the amount of power generation during the availability of sunlight, and the payback period are clarified through this tool. The free tool of CSTEP called CREST allows an assessment before investing to give clarity to many questions concerned.

The aerial survey conducted in Bengaluru explored the Rooftop Potential of the city. Bengaluru is targeting a capacity of 1.2 GW   RTPV  by 2022. The ranking by CREST  helped BESCOM to strategically plan PV  implementation in the city.

Manjunath Gangadhar of Smart Sustain had an interaction with Jai Asundi of CSTEP, who used Li-dar to survey the solar rooftop potential of the city of Bangalore. This venture is funded by MacArthur Foundation. The survey showed the optimum possibilities of rooftop solar power generation. Building owners can estimate the solar potential of their rooftops. DISCOMS can assess the solar potential of cities. This is done by using the high-resolution imagery and virtual 3D maps developed through aerial surveys.

The future of rooftop solar in India looks promising. Leveraging the best opportunities for rooftop solar in any city and accelerating India’s development powered by clean energy is the clear way of going green for the country to make its mark globally.
