Two Wheeler EVs: Auto Expo 2020

Hero Electric and EeVe India were some companies that show cased their electric two wheelers at the Auto Expo 2020.  Hero Electric is India’s leading manufacturer of electric two wheelers. The first of its kind electric motorcycle has a top speed of 85 kmph (kilometer per hour) and a range of over 160 km on a single charge in Eco mode. The Hero Electric AE-47 is priced at Rs. 1.25 – 1.5 lakhs. The company also unveiled the Hero Electric AE-29 is an IOT (Internet of Things)-enabled electric scooter with Bluetooth connectivity, mobile app, and top speed of 55 kmph. It can be charged in under four hours and has a range of 80 km on a single charge. The company also announced that it will soon be launching a three wheeler called the Hero Electric AE-3 Trike. The Hero Electric AE-3 Trike is a first of its kind electric three-wheeler with two front wheels. The new age three wheeler has a top speed of 80 kmph if the battery is fully charged. The battery takes around five hours to charge. The electric three wheeler has a 48 V lithium-ion battery and is equipped with a digital instrument console, mobile charger, and other impressive features. The company has around three lakh electric two wheelers on road in India, today.

Additionally, EeVe India, an electric two-wheeler manufacturer from Orissa, unveiled a new electric scooter as well as a premium electric motorcycle at the Auto Expo 2020. Both the newly showcased electric two wheelers have been launched under the premium segment of products in EeVe India’s product portfolio. The Forseti electric scooter and Tesero electric motorcycle will be launched in the second half of 2020. The company claims that the Forseti electric scooter has a maximum speed of between 60 to 70 kmph. The Tesero electric motorcycle has a maximum speed of 90 to 100 kmph. Both the vehicles will be priced under Rs. 1 lakh.

Piaggio, an Italian auto manufacturer, has stated that it will be launching electric mobility related solutions for the ecosystem in a year or two. Piaggio unveiled the Vespa Electtrica at the Auto Expo 2020. This high performing EV has been in production in Europe for a while now.

India surpassed China to become the largest two wheeler automobile market in the world. The share of two wheelers in the India market is 70% of the total vehicles in the country. This makes two wheelers a low hanging fruit for the adoption of electric vehicles in India. In its electric vehicle adoption roadmap announced in 2019, NITI Aayog has stated that all two wheelers sold after 2025 should be electric.
