Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission’s new order on solar rooftops not going well with the KRESMA

On December 9, 2019, the state of Karnataka has issued an order as an attempt to speed up capacity additions in the rooftop solar segment which hasn’t submerged well with the rooftop solar installers.

The exasperated Karnataka Renewable Energy Systems Manufacturers Association (KRESMA)  laid their grievances in a press conference. Manjunath Gangadhar of Smartsustain.in ,in a conversation with Ramesh Shivanna (President of KRESMA) tries to throw light into the intricacies of the order passed , comparing net metering and gross metering.

As per   the order, the commission has broadly categorized the business models where DISCOMs will be the sole mediators. The order  takes away the right of the consumer to choose his supplier. The profit from generating power through a natural resource should not be taken away from consumers by government-owned DISCOMs.

This is not just in Karnataka but in many states where the hassle between Rooftop Solar Industry and DISCOMs has emerged. It appears to be an attempt by the DISCOMs to tarnish the rooftop industry to minimize their losses.
