KFC, one of the world’s largest restaurant chains, decided on implementing non-reusable or non-recoverable plastic packaging completely as a sustainability commitment by 2025.

This decision adheres to KFC’s long-term agenda to introduce more strategies in sustainable packaging in both generating and utilising sustainable packaging options, adding growth to eradicate plastic packaging in the market.

Being a global brand with over 22,000 restaurants in more than 135 countries, the impact this decision could make on all other labels and businesses will be massive and for the betterment of the environment. KFC believes this also expresses one of their business’s core as environmental sustainability and this action acknowledges that to the global consumer community.

The brand has partnered with major franchisees and suppliers to identify alternatives for plastic to achieve its goal.

KFC has been carrying out an audit for franchisees to recognise plastic waste reduction possibilities, collaborating with providers to know sustainable packaging options for pieces like lids, straws, cutlery and plastic bags, placing market-specific objectives to recycle, reduce and reuse. It will also assist franchisees to incorporate their sustainability plans adhering to the specific needs of local customers and markets.

KFC Singapore has stopped giving plastic cup lids and straws in 84 restaurants. As for Romania and France, they aim to provide paper straws while in India, efforts are ongoing to replace plastic bags, straws, bowls and cups supplied in the restaurants for consumers.

Apart from this, KFC’s parent company Yum! Brands, Inc. has committed to sourcing 100% fibre-based packaging by 2020 from recycled or certified places.

KFC has partnered with NextGen Consortium, a multi-industry global consortium, for global packaging innovation aiming to develop the recovery, design, commercialization of food packaging substitutes.

This partnership hopes to recognise recoverable fibre packaging outcomes that are globally suitable.

The brand had earlier succeeded in another sustainable ambition by 2018 where all chickens bought by KFC U.S. would be grown sans antibiotics.

Focusing on public health after recognising the risk of resistance to human antibiotics, the brand had worked on this initiative while highlighting the well-being of the consumer community and the sourced flocks.

The first-ever major chicken chain to expand its antibiotic-free commitment to bone-in chicken was the KFC U.S. They had emphasised going back to its origin and legacy of serving finger-lickin’ good chicken in every sandwich, bucket and boxed meal, operating intricately with more than 2000 farms to attain the objective alongside their chickens with high-quality and particular standards to succeed this goal.

KFC continues to work fervently towards operating as a brand structured with sustainability to benefit all the parties involved in the business chain it has created. It has become a standard and example for other brands.
