Make Agriculture More Sustainable and Environment Friendly

Ways in which we can make farming more sustainable

For decades agriculture has been the backbone of our nation. About 50% of our current population rely on agriculture today. Out of all these , majority of them still use the traditional ways of farming even now. It is also found that agriculture is one of the main causes that release huge amount of green house gases in the country. It is known that one of the main factors that cause climate change is due to the large amount of green house gases released which in turn effects the crop yield making it poorer every time.

So, what can we do about it? Agriculture is a main source of income for many and the country gets majority of its food from it.

The answer to this is not that complicated. We need to change our traditional agricultural methods and use the smart agricultural techniques. Let’s have a look at some ideas given below:

  • Using renewable energy: The use of solar energy, wind energy or other forms of renewable energy to power the machines ,vehicles and other tools used for agriculture is one way of being smart. This will take a load of other non-renewable resources such as  petrol and diesel. These energies are clean and have zero emission cutting down the release of greenhouse gases greatly. It maybe a bit costly in the beginning but in the long run it will make up for it.
  • Organic Farming: Organic farming is one of the best ways of making farming sustainable. Using natural fertilizers over chemical ones can not only be healthy but it also has zero effect on the land unlike the chemical fertilizers which reduce the fertility of the land over a period of time making them unusable later. Also using chemical pesticides can cause harmful health conditions like cancer etc. for the consumer. For the same reason customers these days look for organic products in the market more.
  • Agroforestry: this is another effective way of farming. It involves planting small trees or other vegetation along with the crops. It helps maintain the soil composure and helps yield better crops along with the benefit of selling the fruits or vegetables that grow on such vegetation.
  • Using appropriate water management system like drip irrigation can help conserve water and make use of it as per our need only. This can especially hep in areas where rainfall is less and it will prevent the crops from becoming dry and wilt away.
There are numerous ways in which we can make farming more sustainable and beneficial for all involved. It not just helps the farmers get better yield but also helps us preserve the land for future needs. It also helps us conserve resources and make sure nothing goes a waste.
