Onam – No Poverty, Zero Hunger, Health and Well-being

“A Hungry man can’t see right or wrong.  He just sees food” (Pearl S Buck)

The development of each country is so fast.  Having paid attention to the technological growth and development of a country, people turn blind to the lingering issues of poverty, hunger and lack of good health and well-being.  The disparity caused, have co-related effects on people and society which is difficult to get rid off.  Food and health, the inseparable part of human existence is often the deciding factor of a country’s poverty.  In order to have a sustainable growth, there should be no poverty in a country which paves way for zero hunger and makes a country healthy.  These are the first and foremost three goals of sustainable development which are for the betterment of people and the environment.

All Indian festivals have their own reason to be celebrated.  India being the land of agriculture, harvest is the core factor to be celebrated.  Harvest festivals are  one among the types of festivals that is given utmost importance in, which are celebrated at different months depending on the native seasons of the states.

People show their reverence and gratitude towards nature through the harvest festival.

Onam, Kerala’s harvest festival, is one such festival that is widely celebrated in the month of August – September by inviting Lord Mahabali to Earth to shower prosperity, health and wealth to the people.

Indian festivals are in sync with sustainable development goals which are followed by many generations.

In specific, Onam is celebrated to achieve the first three goals of sustainable development which focus on No poverty, Zero hunger and Health and well-being.  Harvesting season brings people with employment opportunities that lead to no poverty.  Having no poverty leads to zero hunger.  ‘Onam sadhya’ the lavish feast provided to everyone on the day of Onam is a significant example contributing to zero hunger.  Onam sadhya not only fills one stomach of all but also one’s heart.  A feast with all types of taste enhances one’s health  and builds them strong from both within and out.  One festival is enough to satisfy the three sustainable goals.

According to UN, the efforts before COVID have a considerable effect on eradicating poverty, hunger and providing good health to people.  But, post COVID situation, there will be a increase in the poverty level, people suffering from hunger and health issues.  We are all at a crisis to bring back the hard earned level of betterment of the society.  For which festivals like Onam need to be celebrated each and every day where all people will get to eat, will be in the pink of health and live out of poverty.
