At Wallmakers people are devoted to the cause of using mud and waste as the chief components of construction materials, to make structures that are both, sensible and charming.
The coining of Wallmakers is really interesting as explained by Vinu Daniel , a renowned architect from Kerala to Manjunath of SmartSustain. Little did Vinu knew that he was going to start Wallmakers when he decided to take up a project without realising that he had been assigned for wall making but not for developing a building.
After completing his B.Arch from The College of Engineering, Trivandrum Kerala,Vinu worked with Auroville Earth Institute for the UNDP (United Nations Development Programme) Post-Tsunami construction. Many humanitarian eye-openers in the course of his practice prompted him towards the cause of sustainable and cost-effective architecture.
His association with the renowned architect Laurie Baker who has been called as “Gandhi of Architecture” because of his belief in nonviolence and his sustainable, organic architecture has contributed a lot in Vinu’s evolving as what he is now. One can doubtlessly say that Laurie Baker laid the foundation of sustainability through the concepts of rainwater harvesting, constructions blending with the surroundings which saved energy consumption way back in late 60’s itself.
Just like bamboo, mud also is a more sustainable and durable material is what Vinu proves. The patented technique of shuttered debris – where cement, soil and waste materials are mixed- is an innovative construction material from Wall makers. They classify waste as anything that was produced, used and then discarded from its original function.
Right from 2007 till date ,the time line of Wallmakers is lavished with awards and the credits goes to the Team leader for his unique and non-conventional ways of architecture. Here is a person who believes that sustainability cannot be forced .
