Climate change has been a major cause of concern for countries across the globe.
In recent years the sea level has been rising steadily, there have been rapid climate changes across the world and the temperatures have been rising at an alarming pace each year. One of the main factors for these changes are carbon emissions which form a barrier in the earth’s atmosphere which blocks the harmful rays of the sun from escaping which in turn increases the temperature worldwide causing global warming.
There are many factors which cause an increase in carbon emission globally. The vehicles we drive which comprise of combustible fuel smoke from factories which are left into the air untreated or neutralized, and another main factor is construction work. Construction work is something that happens on a global scale and it happens quite very often. The cement which is used in construction is one of the main sources of carbon emission globally. Wherever construction is involved cement is one of the base materials used for it.
Is it possible to construct buildings without the use of cement to hold it together?
The answer is simple; we can’t.
What else can we do so as to reduce the emission rate?
Use sustainable cement for construction.
What is sustainable cement?
Sustainable cement gained from Portland cement which is a type of cement which consists of limestone as its main ingredient.
It is made by heating clay and limestone in a kiln. Depending on the technology used it is said that the Co2 emissions can be reduced drastically and help curb climate change. It is said that by using this cement by 2050 we could cut the emission rate by 7-11 billion tons of Co2. By the use of a traditional way of heating the materials, Co2 produced by it is a great deal. If this technique is changed, emission can be cut by almost half. By adding other ingredients like industrial waste etc. the cement can be made stronger as well compared to the traditional cement. Calix, an Australian cement company makes cement using steam instead of kilns which reduce emission and gives cleaner cement compared to others. The process makes it easier to control the gas emission thereby cutting the Co2 source by a great deal.
There are many such new ways involved in making sustainable cement. Construction being something that occurs globally can help cut down emission rates drastically by using sustainable techniques for acquiring cement, thereby making a greener and cleaner world in the future.
