Sustainable Fashion and India

The rich craft heritage and prosperous textile history lead to the emerging standards of sustainable fashion which new generation Indian designers are aspiring to. The creative heads out there focus on enhancing the aesthetics by embracing sustainable practices that benefit both people and the planet.

The following are a few shops among the many which run through sustainable initiatives:

Fab India

One of India’s largest private platforms, whose products are made out of traditional skills, techniques, and skill-based processes.

The company links over 55,000 craft based rural producers to the urban market, thus effectively contributing to sustainable rural employment and preserving India’s traditional handicrafts and methods.

Fab India has been around for about 60 years whose vision is to celebrate India and endeavor to bring all that they love about India among world customers. Their mission also includes providing customers with Fab India products that delight them by interpreting India’s rich heritage and traditional knowledge, while protecting the natural environment. A few among their wide range of products are clothing, beauty, food, homeware, etc.

Doodlage

The team focuses on the upcycle of factory waste into short limited edition collections.

The season-less well-furnished garments, created from new fabrics which are made out of recycled post-consumer waste and post cutting scarps. During the process, the team segregates and converts the doodlage’s leftover waste into accessories, soft – furnishing products stationery products, and paper to make their own plastic-free packaging. All the pieces and fabrics are made with their amazing team in ethical production units.

No Nasties

The first clothing brand to be fair trade licensed in India, aims at the labor of love – for the planet, for fellow beings, and for good designs. All the products are made of 100% organic cotton in a fair trade factory following vegan principles. The important reason behind this initiative is the cotton farmers’ suicide at an alarming rate of one every 30 minutes in India. Farmers have to bear the high costs of modern farming, while their unreliable yields and returns result in a vicious cycle of debt where they feel that the only escape is to take their life.

The team looked at the current initiatives in India to address this issue and are glad to discover a solution in organic and fair trade practices.

By using natural seeds (not GMO) and natural means of weed and pest control ( no synthetic fertilizers and pesticides).

Organic cotton is grown which costs farmers less ( eliminating high debts and eventually suicides!) and costs the planet a lot less too in water and energy savings. It maintains soil health, eliminates toxic chemicals entering the water streams and food systems. Vegan clothes are free from any animal products, where there is no animal testing or cruelty associated with them.

The promotion of sustainable fashion is a natural way to sell products with no harm to the environment. Adopting such methods and raw materials will benefit, customers the, planet, and support communities.
