Novel Corona Virus also called COVID 19 took the world by storm. Since its spread, it has affected over 200 million people worldwide. Countries across the world went into lockdown so as to tackle its spread and economies have been at an all-time low since the great depression. It has been months since many of the industries, educational institutions and other business establishments across the world have functioned properly. Many people have lost their jobs and thus their livelihood. Sustainable growth has become the need of the hour for countries across the world. Sustainable growth can help the nations to recover at a steady pace over a period of time.
So, what is a sustainable food system?
A sustainable food system is a system which helps boost the economy and its surrounding social system while providing healthy food to the nation’s people.
How can a sustainable food system help the nation during the post-pandemic recovery phase?
The demand for healthy and safe food across the nation is high. The producers and retailers are not able to meet this need efficiently. Thus, this system aims to provide the people of the nation with sustainable food sources thereby reducing the impact of excess urban food consumption (which is caused due to lack of production and panic buying) and promoting a better rural-urban connect. It can help raise awareness among people of all age group about healthy food systems and ensure the availability of food for all the people. It also aims to grant the farmers direct access to the market so that good quality food can be sold at low prices. It also aims to help improve the reach of wholesalers and retailers who sell these food products. This project is currently being undertaken by states like Delhi and West Bengal.
The aim of the project is to build the food intake and consumption of the consumers (Citizens) based on healthy and sustainable food.
The sustainable food system is one of the right ways ahead for the nation so that it can recover at a steady pace during the post-pandemic period. It will help the nation grow in terms of economic growth and tackle the consumption needs of the people. It will help ease the impact on the economy caused due to COVID 19.
