Tamil Nadu Ranks First in National Water Management Awards

Tamil Nadu, the South Indian state is one of the most drought-prone areas in the country. It usually receives less rainfall, as it gets its share from retreating monsoon.

Though it faces these difficulties recently it reached the top rank in water management charts during Jal Shakti’s national awards which is conducted by the union ministry.

The second place was bagged by Maharashtra and the third by Rajasthan. This is the second award of its kind. The awards were given in a ceremony that was conducted on November 11th and 12th. Mizoram got the award for special states.

The state was awarded based on their performance in the usage of irrigation schemes such as check dams, an increase in irrigation coverage, and their micro-irrigation techniques being used. They have made over 160 check dams so far.

The credit for this victory can be traced back to 2 years ago when water resources conservation and river restoration corporation was set up exclusively for the purpose of water conservation and irrigation management.

Water conservation has become the need of the hour for a country like India which faces drought every other year. The country is dependent on the monsoon season which brings rain to many parts of the country. Sometimes the monsoon brings less rainfall while other times we get rain in abundance. Especially with climate change occurring at an alarming pace, it is hard to predict when the country will receive rainfall. With its huge population and the population explosion, the water supplies are strained greatly and this leads to drought situations across the nation. With states such as Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, and Rajasthan this especially makes a huge impact as, in general these states get less rainfall. The population in these states is also high which leads to further chaos. There have been many instances where people have died due to lack of water. Since agriculture also is poor during these times the probability of food shortage and suicide among farmers is also high.

It is a viable option to use advanced irrigation and water management tactics in these states and they are doing a good job which is why they did well in the award ceremony ranking first, second and third places respectively.

The union government also gives their support for this scheme by giving them funds and backing them up as and when required. This award ceremony is a way of honor them for the job they do in these fields.
