The International Solar Alliance between India and France

The main objective of ISA was to promote solar energy in around 121member nations

The ISA (International Solar Alliance) is an alliance formed by Prime minister Modi in November 2015 with the then President Francois Hollande to promote solar energy in almost 121 nations around the globe. The Prime Minister also had said that India would meet and even exceed its targets set by the Paris Climate agreement emphasizing the need for global climate partnership pointing that the ISA was one of those important ones under it.

The main objective of ISA was to promote solar energy in around 121member nations and bring about a 1 trillion investment to bring them affordable solar energy. Its headquarters is located in India – Gurugram. With the recent pandemic at large ISA aims to provide some states 24×7 electricity so that they could store their vaccines without a hitch. As we all know vaccines need to be kept in low temperatures to prevent chemical reactions from taking place.

So now let’s take a deeper look into what the ISA is:

It is a group of solar rich countries located between the Tropic of Cancer and Capricorn. There are currently 89 countries that are signed up for this and around 72 have contributed to this as of now. A couple of weeks back India had said that the membership for the ISA would be open for all member nations of the UN and would gladly add any country that would be stepping forward to take the initiative. It currently can be categorized into three main bodies for its functioning. The Assembly, Secretariate and the committees. While the assembly takes important decisions etc. the secretariate looks into the functioning of ISA. It is funded through the willing contributions of the member nations, partnering countries and also the UN since this is a global body for the benefit of humanity.

The founding conference of the ISA was in March 2018 and was co-hosted by our Prime minister and the current French president Emmanuel Macron.  Apart from them, there were other heads of states and important dignitaries from various countries. Since the US under Donald Trump administration had no interest in the climate pact and other similar alliances, they did not attend the same. The French President showed his displeasure on the same through his references on their act to withdraw from the Paris agreement while addressing the alliance. They are set to establish the world solar bank which may be located in India.

The steering committee of ISA may soon meet to discuss on the same and also make our nation a lead member of the ISA by giving us 30% shares in the proposed bank. With the recent change in the US administration, it is also said to contribute greatly on the same and strengthen the ISA.
