World’s First Zero-Carbon Gas Grid – Cutting Carbon Emissions

Our world as of now is combating a pandemic that has taken an immense toll on humanity.

Nations all around the world have joined their efforts to curb this threat to humanity. So, this shows that change can be orchestrated by society through strong political willpower and there are threats far greater than the pandemic that we are dealing right now, that is Climate change.

Climate change if not given attention can quietly evolve into a catastrophic threat that will turn our environment inhospitable not only for us but for all organisms in this planet.

To curb this impending threat a strong decision has to be made from higher degrees of political power or levels of government and the Government of UK are taking right steps towards a greener way of Energy production and consumption. UK government is planning to decarbonize their gas sector which comprises of 284,000 kilometres of gas pipelines to move from delivering methane-based natural gas to zero carbon-hydrogen and biomethane. This initiative is named ‘Gas Goes Green’, bringing together all of the UK’s gas network companies, which includes SGN, Wales & West Utilities, Cadent, Northern Gas Networks and National Grid to cut out carbon emissions by using hydrogen and other green gas in projects around the country. In Britain, 23 million properties that are 85 per cent of UK homes rely on the gas pipeline for heating, cooking and hot water. Industrial production plants relied upon the power predominantly produced from fossil fuels and steps like this indicate Britain’s strong resolve towards advocating sustainability.

Studies show that transitioning from methane to Hydrogen will have the effect of reduced carbon emissions of taking away 526,433 cars from the streets.

Reducing methane gas emissions is vital in the fight against climate change as it has a global warming potential 21 times greater than that of carbon dioxide. This will be the most significant step towards the ambitious plan of the UK to meet the net-zero carbon footprint target by 2050.

The progress towards a sustainable future should not be limited to countries like the UK or other developed nations.

It should be evenly adopted across the globe through global participation and finding better and efficient ways to achieve economic growth for the developing nations too.

There should be a strong political will from each nation towards lowering carbon emission levels to an extent where our environment is not affected. Then and then only do we have the chance of fighting climate change.
